Afghan Center - Fremont The Afghan Center's home base in Fremont, California, extends a lifeline to immigrants and refugees in Alameda Country, resolving current crises and helping them become healthy, productive members of the community. The Center provides a broad range of services; in a typical day the staff might provide information and referral for health services, help a mother find her son, locate housing for a new immigrant, assist a client in applying for a passport, and provide translation services to resolve a legal crisis. The need for these services is greater than ever before, due to cuts in government funding for social services and a recent wave of new immigrants as conditions worsen in Afghanistan. More clients appear each day at the Afghan Center as information about our services travels by word-of-mouth. While most of our clients are Afghans, all are welcome and no one is turned away. The Afghan Center in Fremont was founded in 1985 by a group of Afghan community leaders in response to the severe lack of services available to Afghan refugees and immigrants. The Afghan Center’s overall goal is to assist Afghan and Middle Eastern refugees and immigrants in adapting to life in the United States and becoming socially and economically self-sufficient. It was the first Afghan Mutual Assistance Agency and was granted IRS 501(c)(3) status in 1987. Programs offered by the Afghan Center over the 19 years have included employment services, on-the-job training, English language training, social and cultural adjustment, summer youth employment intake and placement, youth leadership development, legal assistance, domestic conflicht resolution and other counseling and education programs.
The Afghan Center also organizes a variety of cultural events including the Afghan New Year's celebration at the Alameda County Fair Grounds. This annual event is one of the largest gatherings of the Afghan community outside of Afghanistan and usually draws over ten thousand Afghans.
